Frequently Asked Questions

Do rhododendrons need acidic soil? +

Yes, rhododendrons need acidic growing conditions to stay healthy and flower well. If your garden soil is not acidic, plant them in a large container using ericaceous compost.

Can rhododendrons grow in pots? +

Yes, compact rhododendrons can grow well in large patio pots. Use ericaceous compost, water regularly during dry weather and avoid letting the compost dry out completely.

Where should I plant rhododendrons? +

Rhododendrons are happiest in a sheltered spot with acidic soil that stays lightly moist but drains well. Most varieties prefer partial shade or dappled light, especially away from strong afternoon sun and cold drying winds.

Are rhododendrons evergreen? +

Most rhododendrons are evergreen, keeping their foliage throughout the year. This makes them useful for adding structure and colour to borders, shaded areas and woodland-style planting even when they are not flowering.

When do rhododendrons flower? +

Rhododendrons usually flower in spring, often between April and June depending on the variety and weather. Their large flower clusters make them one of the best shrubs for early-season colour.

What is the difference between rhododendrons and azaleas? +

Azaleas belong to the rhododendron family, but they are usually smaller with finer leaves. Rhododendrons tend to have larger evergreen leaves and bigger flower clusters, while azaleas can be evergreen or deciduous depending on the variety.
